First assessment and new programme for the National Publishers' Union

The implementation of the Booktracking tool, the creation of a support fund for authors of failing publishers, the overhaul of the Paris book fair, support for "small publishing"...

At its general meeting on June 25, the Syndicat national de l'édition (SNE) made its first assessment of the past year and presented the new challenges facing the sector. It also chose the members of its new executive for the next two years.

+ 5.5% in sales in 2019

Due to the health crisis, market figures for the 2019 edition will not be available until September. However, according to initial forecasts, the sector is expected to show a 5.5% growth in publishers' revenues compared to 2018, driven by school books and comics (+1.6% excluding school books).

"This significant momentum compared to previous years has been broken sharply due to the containment and closure of bookstores from March to June, suggesting a much less encouraging year 2020", indicates NIS.

And he goes on to say: "The unprecedented crisis the world has experienced in recent months has revealed that all links in the book chain are interdependent, but also that its actors are capable of mobilizing together."

In this connection, he recalled that it was with the Syndicat de la librairie française (SLF) and the Conseil permanent des écrivains (CPE) that the SNE negotiated emergency measures and a recovery plan with the government. The plan to support the book industry announced on 11 June last amounts to 230 million euros.

A programme on transparency and solidarity

The union presented its programme based on transparency and solidarity.

It now wants to set up its Booktracking system for more transparency. This is a common tool for authors, publishers and booksellers that will make it possible to find out about book sales almost in real time. It also wants the creation of a support fund to remunerate authors of defaulting publishers.

It will also work on the overhaul of the Paris book fair and hopes that the transposition of the copyright directive will take place as soon as possible "in order to strengthen the right of content creators and rights holders to be remunerated while promoting access to creation for all".

And in his speech after the votes, Vincent Montagne, the new Chairman of the NES, also specified that special attention will be paid to the "'small edition', which has been particularly affected by the crisis and which plays a major role in the vitality and diversity of creation".
