The former paper production business of International Paper, which operates the Saillat paper mill in France, is officially taking off by going public.

In December 2020, packaging, pulp and paper products maker International Paper announced it would spin off its paper business into a separate publicly traded company. It's done: on Oct. 1, Sylvamo went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SLVM.

Based in Memphis, Tennessee, as International Paper, has accumulated over the last 12 months $3.2 billion in sales (to end June 30, 2021). The company, headed by Frenchman Jean-Michel Ribiéras, employs 7,000 people in Europe, Latin America and North America. Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, Sylvamo Europe operates two pulp and paper mills in France (Saillat in the Limousin region) and Russia (Svetogorsk).

"We believe in the promise of paper to educate, communicate and entertain." said Jean-Michel Ribiéras, CEO of Sylvamo, who joined International Paper in 1993. "As a stand-alone company, Sylvamo has the strategic flexibility, strong leadership and teams, best-in-class plants in attractive regions and iconic global brands to create long-term value for our employees, customers and shareholders."

In the European market, Sylvamo produces papers for commercial sheet and roll printing (with the brands Jetstar, Preprint and Pro-Design) and papers for inkjet printing and toners (Ballet, HP Papers, Impulse, Pro-Design...).

Unveiled last August, the name Sylvamo comes from the Latin "silva" for forest, and "amo" for love.
