A new paper packaging for the healthcare industry

Packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki designates Push Tab as the first paper-based tablet package designed to meet the strict safety requirements of regulated pharmaceutical packaging.

Finnish packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki has teamed up with Syntegon, a German packaging technology provider, to develop innovative healthcare packaging. Push Tab is designated by both companies as the first paper-based tablet packaging designed to meet the strict safety requirements of regulated pharmaceutical packaging.

Using a barrier coating technology, Huhtamaki claims to be able to make the durable paper packaging sealable "without compromising safety, functionality or protective properties compared to traditional mono PVC blisters." A mechanical treatment should allow consumers to easily push the tablet through without damaging the product inside. The material is then processed and formed with Syntegon's paper forming technology and machines.

"European sales of flexible packaging in the pharmaceutical category had an estimated value of ?1.1 billion in 2020, of which approximately 80% is blistered. We are pleased to help our customers seize the opportunities with Push Tab paper, designed for circularity, which presents the first sustainable alternative for this type of packaging." fabio Daidone, Huhtamaki's flexible packaging sales manager, said in a statement.

With operations in 36 countries and 82 locations worldwide, Huhtamaki has 18,200 employees and recorded 3.3 billion euros in net sales in 2020. The group's headquarters are located in Espoo, Finland.
