Elopak Unveils New Foil-Free Carton

The paperboard preserves the integrity of the product without the need for a layer of aluminum, typically used in aseptic packaging.

Elopak announces a new, more environmentally friendly aseptic package. Called Pure-Pak eSense, the package was designed with technology from Elopak's refrigerated product line. The paperboard preserves the integrity, safety and shelf life of the product without the need for a layer of aluminum, typically used in aseptic packaging, the company says.

Aseptic packaging involves sterilizing the package, filling it with a sterile product in a sterile environment, and sealing it to prevent recontamination by unwanted organisms.

"Aluminum is a finite natural resource, which means it does not renew itself over time. In addition, the extraction and production of aluminum is energy-intensive and has a higher carbon footprint than other materials used in beverage packaging "Marianne Groven, Elopak's director of sustainable development, explains.

Among other sustainability innovations, Elopak also offers unbleached natural paperboard packaging, cap-less packaging, and attached cap systems that can be recycled with paperboard cartons.

"Over time, we have continuously improved the environmental profile of our packaging. For example, between 2014 and 2020, we managed to reduce the carbon footprint of a standard package with a cap from 32 gCO2e to 25 gCO2e." emphasizes Marianne Groven.

Founded in Norway in 1957, Elopak (Ferd Group) employs 2,600 people and sells more than 14 billion cartons each year in over 70 countries.
