R&D: Metsä Board switches to 3D modeling of future packaging tests

Paperboard producer Metsä Board is using a new modeling system to accelerate packaging development and reduce its carbon footprint.

Paperboard manufacturer Metsä Board has begun deploying a digital packaging development tool, the 3Dexperience platform from French software company Dassault Systèmes. The online platform allows the Finnish group to model in 3D and test packaging solutions virtually during design.

This simulation technology allows for 85% faster development compared to the traditional method of physical prototypes, according to Metsä Board.
The system manages the development of the entire product life cycle, from material selection to delivery. The new technology makes it possible to recommend the most appropriate packaging materials and packaging structures.

"We wanted to accelerate our pace of innovation to help our customers - packaging manufacturers as well as brands - with optimal packaging solutions and reduce their carbon footprint." says Markku Leskelä, Metsä Board's Development Director.

For example, Metsä Board can now test the compression of boxes or perform drop tests in a matter of hours, compared to days or even weeks with traditional physical testing methods.
