From 2026, the new plant will produce 89% of the steam required by the paper mill in Ardèche.

The new boiler project at fine art paper manufacturer Canson is officially underway. At a cost of 6 million euros, the Ardèche paper manufacturer based in Saint-Marcel-les-Annonay will install a biomass boiler, designed, installed and operated by Engie Solutions.

At present, the Canson site, which produces around 15,000 tonnes of paper a year for worldwide distribution and has topped 100 million euros by 2022, uses a natural gas-fired boiler.

Once construction is completed in 2026, heat for the site, which produces around 15,000 tonnes of paper a year, will come from a 5 MW biomass boiler, supplying 89% of the plant's steam requirements, i.e. 31 GWh of useful heat a year in the form of steam.
The wood used will consist of 80% forestry chips and 20% pallet shavings, sourced locally. This biomass consumption should avoid the emission of almost 5,715 tonnes of fossil CO2 per year.

"The Fila Group and Canson are committed to making ourselves as sustainable as possible. In fact, we announced our strong commitment to investing in sustainable projects during the visit of our Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Employment, Olivier Dussopt, on September 2, 2022, recalls Luca Pelosin, CEO of Canson and COO of the Italian Fila Group, of which Canson has been a member since 2016.
To this end, we have chosen to strengthen our collaboration with one of our major partners, Engie Solutions, which has provided us with its expertise and assistance in developing our decarbonization project via the implementation of a biomass boiler for steam production at our paper mill site located in Saint-Marcel-les-Annonay."

This new infrastructure has been financed to the tune of two million euros by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe).
