UPM Communication Papers, the graphic paper division of Finland's UPM Group, is committed to reducing CO2 emissions per tonne of paper produced in Europe to less than 100 kg by 2030. This target represents a reduction of over 70% compared to the 2023 baseline. The plan covers both direct site emissions and those linked to external energy purchases (Scope 1 and 2).
To achieve this, each of the ten plants, all of which are located in Europe, has been given a specific roadmap outlining the actions to be taken locally.
UPM Communication Papers' first priority is to electrify its industrial processes. Equipment powered by steam generated by burning wood residues will gradually replace coal- and peat-fired plants.
The paper manufacturer, which employs 5,000 people, also intends to secure long-term purchase contracts for wind-generated electricity, as part of a cleaner energy mix.
In addition to production, the Group intends to reduce its emissions across the entire supply chain by 30% by 2030 ("-30 by 30"). This includes upstream and downstream transport, as well as raw materials.
For logistics, efforts will focus on the development of intermodal freight, the use of electric trucks and other renewable-fuel transport.
On the procurement side, UPM mentions working with its suppliers to reduce emissions from raw materials, but gives no further details.
Niina Niemelä, Head of Sustainability at UPM Communication Papers, states: "It's not just about reducing emissions, it's also about ensuring that paper remains a sustainable, long-lasting choice for future generations."
