The Finnish packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki, which specialises in food and beverage packaging, and the American start-up accelerator organisation Food System 6 (FS6) will support 8 startups developing sustainable solutions in the circular economy. These companies will benefit from mentoring and financial support of up to 300?000.
The aim of the programme is to accelerate the development of promising young companies that strive to provide innovative sustainable solutions in areas such as waste management, sustainable packaging alternatives, innovation of new materials and renewable production models, the Finnish group explains.
Among the eight selected companies, several are focusing on new solutions in packaging. Nafici Group is developing ecopulping, a process that consists of transforming agricultural waste into raw material for packaging and paper. Rhizoform is using mushrooms to develop an organic alternative to plastic insulated bags and food packaging. As for SoluBlue The company produces biodegradable, algae-based packaging that extends the shelf life of fresh food and reduces plastic waste.
The other selected companies operate in various fields ranging from agriculture to waste processing. Food System 6 is a non-profit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose mission is to support entrepreneurs interested in the environmental impact and processing of food growing, production and distribution.
