Every stage of a print project - from format to finishing, from transport to media type - has a direct influence on its environmental impact. To help its users manage these parameters with full knowledge of the facts, Print.com deploys an approach based on carbon traceability, the use of certified materials and an eco-design logic accessible right from the creation phase.
To structure this approach, the online printing platform relies on a regular analysis of its carbon footprint. Carried out in partnership with Carbone 4, this measurement follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and covers all scopes 1, 2 and 3. It enables us to identify the main CO2 emitting areas, whether transport, production or digital services, and to target actions to be undertaken with partner sites.
Certified materials and production requirements
Our paper selection focuses primarily on FSC-certified references, with many recycled options available for most products. Inks are vegetable-based or formulated without mineral oil, while coatings are chosen for their compatibility with existing recycling channels.
This demand for high quality materials goes hand in hand with close collaboration with the production sites mobilized by the platform. Print.com works with around 150 workshops in several European countries, which are monitored both technically and environmentally. An increasing proportion of them are powered by renewable electricity, depending on the capacity of each site.
Ecodesign integrated into practices
What's more, to make the environmental trade-offs more accessible upstream, Print.com provides its users âeuros graphic designers, agencies, production departments âeuros with a series of practical resources. Standard formats, adjusted grammages, reduced solids or limiting complex finishes: there are many ways to reduce the impact of a printed medium without compromising its functional or aesthetic requirements.
Practical advice and technical recommendations are available online to guide these choices right from the design phase, in line with the characteristics of the products offered on the platform.
Indicator monitoring and continuous improvement
All the environmental data collected is published each year in an online impact report. This document details the emissions measured, the margins for improvement identified and the concrete actions implemented, such as logistics optimization or support for offset projects.
Led by a specialized in-house team, Print.com's environmental approach is based on constant dialogue with its partner workshops and professional customers. It is part of a wider movement in the graphics sector, where digital tools now enable finer monitoring and greater transparency of production processes.
