No environmental display for packaging alone for the CNE

The association of packaging value chain professionals reminds us that the display concerns the product-packaging couple.

While the European Commission is inviting brands to put in place an environmental and social display on their products, the National Packaging Council (CNE) would like to clarify one point. "As environmental information must relate to 'the overall characteristics of the product-packaging pair', the CNE asks marketers to refrain from using any environmental impact indicator relating to packaging alone, in accordance with Article 54 of Law No. 2009-967 of 3 August 2009"

According to article 15 of the law on the fight against waste and the circular economy (law n°2020-105 of 10 February 2020), this display must provide the consumer with information on the environmental characteristics or on the environmental and social characteristics of a good, a service or a category of goods or services, based on a life cycle analysis. This information may be "by means of marking, labelling or any other appropriate process, including reliable dematerialisation".

In 18 months' time, a review of this voluntary scheme will be carried out in order to define precisely, by decree, the methodology and methods of these displays applying to the categories of goods and services concerned.

The association of packaging value chain professionals remains at the disposal of companies to help them in the methodological approach to the environmental assessment of their packaged products.
