Metsä starts construction of a pilot plant for fibre packaging

The plant is expected to begin operations at the end of 2021.

Metsä Spring, the innovation division of the Finnish forestry group Metsä, and Valmet, a Finnish company specialising in equipment for the paper industry, started construction of a very special plant last December. Located in Äänekoski, Finland, the plant is a pilot site for the production of volume packaging made from wood fibre.

This project, unveiled last year, aims to test and further develop this new type of recyclable packaging that could replace, on a large scale, current plastic and aluminium solutions.

"We want to build a relevant company based on the know-how of the Metsä Group, Valmet and several other companies. Our goal is ambitious. The main raw material is traditional, sustainably produced wood fiber. We will do our best to process it into high-quality packaging while minimizing the environmental impact "said Jarkko Tuominen, project manager at Metsä Spring.

Construction of the pilot plant began on December 10 and the plant is expected to begin operations at the end of 2021.
