A milk carton made of vegetable matter at Lidl

In addition to being recyclable, this Tetra Pak brick is made of certified plant-based plastic from sugar cane.

Lidl is going to market milk in France that is packaged in a plant-based carton. The carton from Tetra Pak, the world leader in food processing and packaging solutions, allows the retailer to reduce its carbon footprint by 19%.

Called Tetra Brik Aseptic (TBA) Edge, this packaging is mainly made of FSC-certified cardboard. "But the real innovation, says the manufacturer, lies in the incorporation of plant-based plastic from Bonsucro-certified sugarcane, which guarantees that it is grown in compliance with strict environmental, economic and social standards."

Once sorted and collected, these plant-based bricks will be transformed into paper, tissues or street furniture.

"This innovation is the result of a collaboration between Tetra Pak, the bottler, and Lidl, the retailer. We are very proud to be the first retailer to offer this own-brand biosourced brick for the French market." says Jean-Baptiste Léger, CSR and Public Affairs Director at Lidl France.

Lidl has set itself the goal of achieving 100% recyclable packaging and a 20% reduction in plastic use by 2025.
