Mondi paper manufacturer starts production of over one million masks per day

Mondi is making its project announced less than a year ago a reality.

Packaging and paper producer Mondi has started production lines for medical masks and meltblowns at its Gronau, Germany, site.

The London Stock Exchange-listed paper group had launched the project in May 2020 to meet demand related to the spread of covid-19. "We identified the shortage of fused nonwovens in Germany at the beginning of the pandemic last year and reacted quickly to set up production of high-quality medical masks." says Jürgen Schneider, Managing Director of Mondi Gronau.

The Mondi Gronau site specializes in the production and processing of films, non-woven materials and elastic components for hygiene products. The plant produces the base material, meltblown, and the elastics for masks. With two highly automated machines and this fully integrated production, the plant produces 700 medical masks per minute, and one million per day. That's seven times faster than a standard face mask production line.

With these OEKO-TEX, Dermatest and Johner-certified masks, Mondi will directly meet the needs of the German health care sector.
