Two Sides denounces the greenwashing campaign of Carrefour

Two Sides puts the points on the i concerning the production of the receipts and their so-called dematerialized version.

The greenwashing campaign of Carrefour does not pass! Two Sides is protesting against Carrefour's recent declarations concerning the end of cash register receipts in its stores. "Carrefour appeals to conventional wisdom and ignores the environmental performance of paper" insists the association of defense of the paper and the printed matter

In this press release, Carrefour indicates that this decision will allow "a considerable saving of paper", to cross "a new step in its zero - waste roadmap", and "strengthen its commitment to the fight against deforestation".

Two Sides regrets the use of these ecological arguments. " The claim that paper is linked to deforestation is false , except that Carrefour does not control the origin of the paper used in its stores."

The organization reminds us that the wood used to produce paper in Europe comes mainly from by-products of the wood industry and 90% of it is located in Europe, where the forest area is growing.
And where pulp may come from plantations, these are managed like other agricultural plantations, and do not strain natural forests. "Deforestation today is mainly due to livestock or soy and palm oil production."

Moreover, notes Two Sides, the amount of paper that may be saved is not a matter of "considerable. " Receipts actually represent less than 0.5% of the total of paper used in France" .

And, when Carrefour proposes to replace the paper receipt "by a dematerialized ticket, accessible online" for customers with a loyalty card, the retail chain "fails to specify" the environmental impacts associated with these practices.

"Storing digital data for a long time is a situation where the impacts of digital are greater than those of paper. In addition, digital data storage requires servers, networks, smartphones or computers which obviously have nothing 'dematerialized', according to the usual formula taken by ease and which is not less misleading."

Finally, Two Sides points out that the AGEC Act enacted in February 2021 already provides that by January 1, 2023, receipts will only be issued at the request of the customer. "Carrefour is therefore presenting as its own initiative the implementation of a provision already enshrined in the law."
