The e-paper revolutionizes the art photo with the Belgian start-up Ionnyk

The Belgian agency Ionnyk has developed a new technology of frame containing a sheet of electronic paper that allows to sublimate the art photo and to reproduce, in addition, evolving works

For the time being, the new technology created by Ionnyk is a world first in the e-paper sector, aimed at a rather wealthy B-to-C clientele and professional photographers. This technology offers many more advantages than LCD screens, already widely used for urban advertising:

  • 99% lower energy consumption;
  • long autonomy (1 year) ;
  • wireless operation ;
  • very high quality display.

As a reminder, the principle of e-paper works by the reaction of an electrical stimulation on millions of microcapsules of black and white inks. It offers a high contrast rate and a wide viewing angle without suffering from a problem of reflections.

The particularity of the connected photo frame, created by Ionnyk, has the same properties as the baryta photo paper, reserved for high-end black & white prints. The quality of its display makes the technology undetectable to the naked eye and does not encounter flickering or reverberation problems as with digital screens.

And what makes this innovation even more spectacular is that the user can connect to an online catalog of works and purchase photos from artists that are intended to change over time. For example, a portrait with open eyes exposed in the morning will be automatically displayed with closed eyes in the evening, thanks to a timer set by the artist.

This novelty is only available in black and white for the moment. The color e-paper is still in development until 2026, according to Mathieu Demeuse, co-founder and CEO of Ionnyk, to reach the same performances.

However, in view of the aesthetic and ecological advantages of this new support in constant evolution, we can hope that it will be democratized in the future to extend to the B-to-B markets, especially in the field of communication. To be continued!
