Consumers willing to pay more for sustainable packaging

Young French people are particularly aware of environmental issues.

69% of French shoppers would be willing to pay more for environmentally friendly packaging, according to a survey of 7000 Europeans. Young French people (22-28 years old) appear to be particularly aware of environmental issues, as 84% of them say they are ready to spend more on ecology. On the contrary, the least inclined (57%) to pay more are the over 65s.

Efforts required from governments and brands

The survey was conducted by Perspectus Global for Pro Carton, the European association of cardboard and flat board manufacturers. It found that 96% of European adults think that governments, as well as retailers and brands, should do more to help the environment. The majority of those surveyed think governments should provide more information about environmentally friendly packaging. The majority also favors a tax to force its adoption. 38% of French respondents believe that retailers are not doing enough to introduce environmentally friendly packaging.

The best ways to fight climate change

People were asked what actions they would take to limit climate change. 32% responded plant more trees, 21% recycle more, 19% use more natural renewable materials, 15% use less man-made materials such as plastic, 9% eat less meat; 4% travel less.

For Tony Hitchin, general manager of Pro Carton, this study confirms that cardboard packaging is the preferred packaging material for consumers: less than one French participant out of 10 prefers plastic.
