The European Carton Excellence Award (ECEA) 2024 unveiled the year's most outstanding carton innovations in Berlin. From product protection to waste reduction, these award-winning creations highlight the versatility of cartonboard as a sustainable packaging solution.

On September 19, 2024 in Berlin, the winners of the European Carton Excellence Awards were announced. The competition highlights the most creative and sustainable designs in cartonboard. This year's edition once again demonstrates the commitment of companies in the sector to combining aesthetics and functionality.

The innovations presented at ECEA 2024 show just how key a role paperboard packaging can play in the transition to a more sustainable economy. The quest for new materials and the design of more environmentally-friendly packaging are key trends for the years to come. Companies will need to continue innovating, while responding to growing consumer demand for solutions that combine practicality, aesthetics and reduced environmental impact.

Origen Flor Natural's award-winning design: aesthetics for protection

Carton of the Year was awarded to Hinojosa Packaging for the packaging design of Origen Flor Natural, created for Laboratorios Flor Natural. This carton, manufactured by Stora Enso, combines protection and presentation with intricate die-cut patterns. This type of packaging is a perfect example of functional packaging that enhances the product while protecting the glass perfume bottle. The combination of aesthetics and security illustrates the possibilities offered by carton materials for high-end products.

Meeting consumer expectations with Pladis Victoria Creations

McVitie Victoria Chocolate Creations packaging, using Metsä Board's cartonboard, won the Public Award 2024. This carton emphasizes a festive and pleasant unpacking experience, with easy opening. It is an example of packaging that satisfies both consumers through its design, and companies through its compatibility with existing production lines. Indeed, the choice of a recyclable material enhances brand image in terms of sustainability, while remaining competitive in industrial processes.

OCB packaging: reducing packaging waste

The Innovation Award was won by the OCB paper and filter pack, designed by Alzamora Group. This reusable single-material pack uses Metsä Board cardboard, thus eliminating excessive waste. This compact model is a concrete example of waste reduction at source. By grouping together several items usually sold separately, the packaging becomes an asset for both the brand and consumers, who can benefit from an all-in-one plastic-free solution.

Calma Products: eco-designed packaging to protect the most vulnerable

The Sustainability Award went to Calma Products for its innovative packaging, developed in collaboration with PAWI Packaging Deutschland and Sappi Deutschland. This packaging solution is distinguished by the use of circular materials and a protective design that meets the needs of young parents. The packaging features a practical opening mechanism, a transparent window and a foldable hanger for on-shelf presentation. By combining protection, practicality and respect for the environment, this creation marks a significant step forward in packaging for childcare products.

A circular approach with recycled fiber creations

The 2024 edition of the ECEAs also rewarded creations using virgin and recycled fibers, promoting a circular economy. The Easy-Life Fish Food packaging, manufactured by Snel BV in collaboration with Smurfit Kappa, is an excellent example. This plastic-free packaging effectively eliminates odors while guaranteeing a fully recyclable solution. Mastering the use of recycled materials is becoming an undeniable asset for companies concerned about their environmental footprint, while offering optimum quality for consumers.
