Players in the carton packaging supply chain have until May 26, 2023 to enter the ECEA Packaging Design Competition.

There is only one month left to enter the European Carton Excellence Awards 2023 (ECEA) packaging design competition. Organized by Pro Carton and the European Carton Manufacturers Association (ECMA), this competition has been rewarding the most innovative carton packaging designs for 27 years. All actors of the supply chain can submit their achievements.

4 categories, 10 prizes to be won including the Cardboard of the Year 2023

Entries, due by May 26, cover four categories: virgin fiber general packaging; recycled fiber general packaging; virgin fiber food and beverage packaging and recycled fiber food and beverage packaging.

All participants will be in the running for the most coveted award of the competition, the Cardboard of the Year. Contestants will also have the option of competing for the Sustainability Award and the Innovation Award.
The public will vote for their favorite package to receive the People's Choice Award, and Platinum and Gold award winners will also be chosen in each category.

A jury of packaging experts chaired by Satkar Gidda

The winners will be selected by a jury of packaging experts chaired by Satkar Gidda, an independent consultant who was sales and marketing director of the London-based design agency SiebertHead for 30 years. He will be joined by Susanna Lippitsch, a packaging designer and teacher, and Sanjeev Das, global packaging director at Unilever, among others.

The jury will score each project based on graphic and structural design, production techniques, cost effectiveness, environmental impact, innovation, and convenience.

The winners will be announced at the official gala to be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Seville, Spain.

Winfried Muehling, marketing and communication manager of Pro Carton, states: "Every year the level of participation in the European carton Excellence Awards is exceptionally high. The awards reward the beauty of the carton, not only in its visual form, which is very aesthetic, but also the functional benefits it offers. It is fast becoming the preferred packaging material for brands looking for a renewable, recyclable and sustainable alternative (...) We look forward to seeing this year's entries and celebrating the next class of winners in September in Seville, Spain."

Last year's Carton of the Year award went to Dutch converter Rutgers Printing & Packaging Solutions and paper group Stora Enso for packaging of tomato snacks .
