Frozen food retailer Picard has chosen AR Packaging's fiber ice cream box to reduce its use of plastic packaging. This cardboard box with integrated lid saves 16.5 tons of plastic per year, according to the manufacturer.
The ice box contains over 95% renewable fiber board, making it recyclable in the paper stream in many countries. Inside, a thin layer of polyethylene (PE) ensures product protection and package integrity.
Gilles Lapique, Packaging Project Manager at Picard, explains:
"We wanted to adapt a box that could be easily mechanized by our packers and that would guarantee all the functionalities of an equivalent plastic package
The French factory AR Packaging in Cholet took up the challenge. The box is supplied to the various ice cream producers for Picard in the form of an assembled tray with an integrated lid and resealable option.
Product leakage is prevented by a construction with a special flap. The lid can be supplied in two options: manually formed after filling; or mechanically formed on the customer's filling and packaging line.
"This fiber-based packaging can be used for many other products besides ice cream, such as frozen foods and chilled ready meals, and help brands significantly reduce their packaging-related carbon footprint." says Pierre Guillebeau, Food and Consumer Goods Sales Manager at AR Packaging.
