This in-house laboratory of the packaging manufacturer will determine how the materials will perform in a recycling plant.

Paper and packaging manufacturer Mondi is opening its first recycling test laboratory. Located in Frantschach, Austria, the laboratory replicates industrial recycling facilities on a smaller scale. The aim is to determine how the packaging will behave in a recycling plant.
The paper manufacturer, which employs 26,500 people worldwide, will focus the tests exclusively on its paper-based packaging with non-paper components such as barrier coatings.

"The data collected in the lab will help improve existing products and provide reliable information about their environmental impact. Mondi will also use the results to determine how the design of new packaging can be improved as well as how best to improve the circularity of its material flows."

"Currently, 78% of the Mondi portfolio group-wide is already reusable, recyclable or compostable, says Elisabeth Schwaiger, Head of R&D and IP Flexible Packaging at Mondi. This recycling lab brings us closer to our MAP2030 goals of having 100% of our products meet these requirements by 2025."
