Innovative recycling at Mondi: 95% of waste transformed into resources

Toilet paper, paper towels, insulation... siliconized and coated paper waste from Mondi's two plants in Germany and the Netherlands is now used as a secondary raw material for other industries. And the packaging and paper manufacturer has no intention of stopping there.

95% of production waste from two Mondi plants is now used as a secondary raw material. Siliconized and coated paper waste from its release paper plants in Jülich, Germany, and Heerlen, the Netherlands, is now repulped and recycled as a secondary raw material for many other applications.

Two years ago, the two plants of the English packaging and paper producer entered into a partnership with Veyzle, a Dutch specialist in paper and plastic recycling, and Wepa, a manufacturer of toilet paper.
Veyzle now recovers Mondi's production waste at these two sites, then sorts, shreds and bottles the various papers before sending them to the Wepa Group's Dutch site.

Wepa has developed a repulping technology that transforms laminated and siliconized paper into toilet paper and paper towels.
The three partners are located close to each other to minimize transport.

Mondi also works with Soprema, a supplier of waterproofing systems and insulation materials. Sopreme uses the paper manufacturer's non-stick coating production waste as a material to manufacture cellulose wadding insulation for buildings.

Carlos Martinez Ezquerra, Flexible Packaging Circular Economy Manager at Mondi, is very proud of the 95% reduction achieved at both sites, and has announced that he is working with Celab, the global organization dedicated to label recycling, to reuse self-adhesive label waste from other distribution sites across Europe.
