Italian papermaker Fedrigoni partners with American manufacturer Mohawk

Through this combination, the two premium paper players intend to expand the reach of their specialty papers worldwide.

Italian paper maker Fedrigoni and New York-based premium paper and envelope manufacturer Mohawk Fine Papers have entered into a manufacturing partnership for their specialty papers.

This strategic agreement will allow the 4,500-person Italian group to expand its presence in the U.S. market and consolidate its "global primacy" on the market of special papers, especially for luxury packaging. Marco Nespolo, CEO of Fedrigoni, emphasizes: "There are also many synergistic opportunities for our self-adhesive materials division, which will strengthen its leadership position in premium labels for the U.S. wine market."

As for Mohawk, which with its 600 employees produces specialty papers including the renowned Mohawk Superfine, this partnership should enable it to accelerate the development of innovative and sustainable solutions.

For Fedrigoni, which until now has only had a branch in South America, this also means "an important step forward" to strengthen its geographical presence in the United States, where it will produce and distribute its products directly, taking advantage of industrial and commercial synergies with Mohawk.

"We will also better support ESG strategies (environmental, social and good governance, Editor's note) of our customers, especially those in the luxury sector, by giving them the possibility to move to nearshoring (i.e. relocating to a nearby region, Editor's note) rather than the overall purchase", adds Marco Nespolo.

The two paper companies say they also want to mutually explore market share growth opportunities for their premium stationery brands, Mohawk's Crane Lettra and Fedrigoni's Fabriano.
