Paboco paper bottles move up a gear

With its new majority investor, Paboco will launch mass production of the paper bottle.

Paboco paper bottles change hands. The Danish joint venture founded in 2019 by Alpla and pulp and paper manufacturer Billerud is now owned by Austrian plastic packaging and recycling manufacturer Alpla.

As majority shareholder, the 23,000-employee group is announcing significant investments to increase production capacity at Paboco.
By the end of 2024, Paboco should be producing its fully recyclable paper bottle in the paper stream, made from FSC-certified fibers at a new plant in Denmark.

"Safety, affordability and sustainability are the main criteria for our packaging solutions. After several years of intensive development and groundbreaking innovations, the Paboco team is now ready to bring its pioneering product to market and make the paper bottle a sustainable alternative for a wide range of customers." says Alpla CEO Philipp Lehner.

Since 2021, Paboco has been testing its paper bottles in the beverage, spirits and laundry markets in collaboration with major brands such as The Absolut Company , Carlsberg Group who is one of the initiators of this paper bottle project, The Coca-Cola Company l'Oréal and Procter & Gamble .
After this successful test phase, mass production of the next generation of recyclable paper bottles is due to start at the end of 2024.

"With the current bottle configuration, we are targeting the beauty, textiles and home care segment, but continued development will also enable us to launch our next-generation bottle in other applications." says Paboco CEO Tim Silbermann.

With the new manufacturing site, the Dane, which currently has just 18 employees, plans to hire considerably more people by the time mass production begins.
