New packaging on the shelves soon. Spanish packaging manufacturer Saica and American chocolate and cookie multinational Mondelez International have joined forces to develop a paper-based packaging solution for multi-pack products in the confectionery, cookie and chocolate markets.
Designed to be recyclable in paper waste sorting, this new paper packaging is heat-sealable and suitable for the Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS) converting and packaging processes of automatic packaging lines. It is available in coated and uncoated versions, and meets the sustainability standards set by the European Confederation of Paper Industries (CEPI).
By 2025, Mondelez, which produces Oreo, Ritz, Lu cookies, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Milka and Toblerone chocolates, among others, has committed to reducing the use of virgin plastic in its rigid packaging by at least 25%, and in all plastic packaging by 5%. It also aims to make 98% of its packaging recyclable by 2025.
As for Saica, its department dedicated to flexible packaging (Saica Flex) intends to introduce at least 5% by weight of post-consumer recycled content in its products by 2025, and to reduce the weight of plastic content by 20% by 2025 and the weight of all paper packaging by 15% by 2025.
"Our ambition to manufacture flexible monomaterial structures, including paper, is a key aspect of achieving all these goals. We hope that, by 2025, 100% of our flexible packaging offering will be recyclable in order to contribute to a truly circular economy." said Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager of Saica Flex.
