Tetra Pak announces a 60 million euro investment in Lund, Sweden, for a pilot plant dedicated to its paper-based barrier. This paper-based barrier is intended to replace aluminum foil in aseptic beverage cartons.
The 24âeuros000-employee packaging giant claims that this aluminum-free barrier would increase the paper content to around 80%, and combined with plant-based polymers, the proportion of renewable material would reach up to 92%. The Sweden-based manufacturer also claims a 43% reduction in carbon footprint.
The future facility will cover several stages, from the manufacture of the barrier, through the production of the packaging material, to the final packaging of the filled bricks. The site, which will also serve as a technical showcase for customers, will enable visitors to visualize the entire industrial process in a single location.
Joakim Tuvesson, Vice President Materials and Packaging at Tetra Pak, says that production at this pilot plant and the arrival of the first customers are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Tetra Pak has also committed to investing around ?100 million a year until 2030 in the development of more sustainable packaging solutions.
As a reminder, the first aseptic food carton incorporating a paper-based barrier was launched in 2023 with Portuguese dairy producer Lactogal.
