As the European Union prepares to implement the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), paper manufacturers are looking to replace plastic solutions and aluminum laminates that are difficult to recycle. Royal Vaassen, a Dutch converter specializing in barrier packaging, has joined forces with Finnish paper manufacturer UPM to develop an all-fiber barrier paper.
Named Barryrwrap, this new range offers protection against oxygen, humidity and light, while being recyclable in the paper and cardboard channels already widely present in Europe.
This range of packaging materials is compatible with existing packaging lines. The flagship product, Barryrwrap Everest, has been designed for soluble coffee and sensitive dry products. Royal Vaassen guarantees clean printing and sealability without modifying existing equipment.
Paper bases for high production rates
The development of Barryrwrap is based on the UPM Solide Lucent substrate. This paper is distinguished by its density and smooth surface, which reduces the amount of barrier layer required and maintains good mechanical strength on high-speed lines," explains the papermaker. Several grammages are offered depending on the end product, from chocolate to instant powders.
The two companies report that Barryrwrap has also been tested on cylindrical canister formats, common for snacks or powdered drinks.
All our solutions are certified for food contact. They comply with the circularity requirements of forthcoming European regulations.
Prototypes will be on show at the Fachpack trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany, from September 23 to 25.
