Packaging: Koenig & Bauer turns varnish into an authentication tool

With Aegis, printers can now add security features invisible to the naked eye to the varnish layer without modifying their production workflow.

Koenig & Bauer launches a range of security solutions for traditional packaging printers. The Protected at print range will "to enable printers to move from the status of mere service providers to that of genuine protection partners for their customers" underlines its subsidiary Koenig & Bauer Vision & Protection.

Invisible data integrated directly into the varnish

The first product in this new series is the Aegis protective varnish system, based on new Stegano technology.
This technology makes it possible to conceal invisible âeuro data in the varnish layer, whether codes, images or unique âeuro identifiers, without impacting design or the usual production workflow. Even under high magnification, these elements remain invisible to the naked eye. This data can be decoded offline using a smartphone application, which optically analyzes the printed image and extracts the hidden information.

Easy to install like a traditional varnish sheet

This safety varnish is applied using ready-to-use varnish plates, which can be handled manually and are as compatible with standard flexo varnishing units as any other varnish plate. What's more, no modification of existing prepress workflows is required, and this solution is compatible with a wide range of varnishes.

According to Koenig & Bauer, one of the major advantages of Aegis is the possibility of using the same varnish plate for different customers or jobs, which represents a significant time and cost saving.

Authentication data to be decrypted with an application

Aimed primarily at the sensitive âeuros health, baby food, cosmetics or âeuros toy packaging markets, the process enables rapid verification of packaging authenticity thanks to the "a verification app âeuros ava" mobile application. This application enables invisible data to be read offline, with immediate verification. It is based on a technology platform shared with that used for euro banknote verification.

Julian Schubert, Managing Director of Koenig & Bauer Vision & Protection, points out that Koenig & Bauer is applying its expertise in âeuro security printing, particularly in âeuro fiduciary documents, to other industrial sectors. "Aegis protective varnish embodies our mission: to make protection simple, intelligent and accessible to all." he adds.
