After several years of turmoil, Sodipa Emballages wants to turn the page. Placed under court-supervised restructuring on June 3, 2026, the Guérande, Loire-Atlantique-based company?which specializes in waxed paper packaging for the meat, fish, and deli industries?voluntarily sought this process to restructure its debt. With stable revenue of 1.4 million euros and several innovations currently being launched, CEO Didier Rio is confident about the future.
One symbolic euro and seven million euros in debt
And although the court-supervised restructuring may seem like a case of déjà vu, Didier Rio emphasizes one point: this situation is nothing like the one in 2012. Back then, the goal was to deal with the debts inherited from the former owner.
When Didier Rio took over Sodipa in 2012 for a symbolic one euro, the company had liabilities of 7 million euros and was losing 2 million euros a year. "After a tremendous amount of work, we reduced our debt to 5 million euros and returned to a balanced budget in 2017." the leader emphasizes.
But that wasn't enough. The company was placed in receivership in 2017. Since the court determined that the liabilities were not the responsibility of the current management, the Commercial Court approved the takeover by Didier Rio, thereby releasing him from the former owner's debts.
When Difficulties Pile Up Despite a Return to Balance
With its financial records reset in 2018, Sodipa returned to a sound financial position. However, the company faced new challenges in 2022 when the tenant of part of the workshop?a large nonprofit organization?stopped paying rent while continuing to occupy the premises. Then the war in Ukraine caused a 30% increase in the price of paper?a rise that could not be passed on to customers. And in 2024, a workplace accident occurred in which Didier Rio lost part of his hand.
Today, Sodipa is doing very well, with revenue of 1.4 million euros and a staff of four. Didier Rio and his accountant estimate that they will be able to pay off the debts within five years. "And we've paid all our suppliers and all the salaries."
A small team that believes in its future
"It was the right time to file for court-supervised restructuring. Despite this process, we're in a good position. We have a very small, close-knit team; we've cut our expenses; our revenue is stable; and we have several innovations to launch on the market."
In particular, it reduced its energy costs by a factor of six by installing LED lighting and adjusting the operating schedules of its most energy-intensive machines. The team was reduced from seven to four people.
Sodipa is in a monitoring period through December 3, 2026. "The court will review our business operations, our payroll, and our profit margins. We are confident." Sodipa thus hopes to secure a debt rescheduling and put an end to the late payment penalties that continue to accumulate.
Three New Products to Help Shape the Future
Didier Rio also hopes that this proceeding will help clarify two legal issues: the association?s unpaid rent and services?the association has, moreover, already been found liable for other violations involving Sodipa?and an issue regarding the unauthorized subleasing of the site.
But far from being content to simply stabilize operations, the Guérande-based business owner is preparing to launch three new products and aims to increase revenue by 20% within three years.
Sodipa has developed a specialized offering for the halal meat industry, which is proving very successful.
The company has also created Guérande fleur de sel sticks?similar to sugar sticks?for fishmongers, butchers, and deli owners. This Guérande salt allows professionals to enhance their products right up to the plate. "This is a brand-new offering, launched just a month and a half ago, that combines a fine local product with the expertise of culinary professionals."
Sopida also offers paper packaging for coarse salt. This paper bag, which has a thin layer of PE, reduces the amount of plastic needed for this type of product by nearly 11 times.
Between financial restructuring, these new products, and the legal disputes he hopes to see resolved, Didier Rio is already looking beyond the observation period.
"I fully intend to celebrate Sodipa's 80th anniversary next year%E2euros%89!"
