100% cardboard packaging for tomatoes and strawberries

The difficulty lay in being able to see the product to be consumed.

On the occasion of the International Agricultural Show, which is currently being held in Paris at Porte de Versailles, Savéol, a Breton cooperative specialising in the production of tomatoes and strawberries, presented its new all-cardboard packaging.

Savéol had already been using cardboard packaging since 2017 for its range of organic tomatoes. Without plastic film, this new packaging, designed in collaboration with the Smurfit Kappa paper group, should soon be used for all the brand's tomato and strawberry ranges.

"It was a big challenge, especially in terms of the visual aspect, recalls Pierre-Yves Jestin, President of Savéol. Consumers want to see the product they are about to buy and that is legitimate. That's why we've worked with Smurfit Kappa to develop an open cardboard package. We spent a lot of R&D on the different assumptions and testing."

"The use of cardboard ensures that almost 100% of packaging can be sorted and recycled properly. If we have confirmation that the consumer perception is positive, then we would like to go even further in this direction in the long run" says the President.
