UPM Raflatac launches recycled PP feed labels

Until now, food contact with this recycled thermoplastic was forbidden.

Labelling solutions manufacturer UPM Raflatac is launching the first polypropylene (PP) food label film produced from recycled plastic, PP PCR Clear and White.

This film is manufactured using a new chemical recycling technology from the Saudi Sabic group, which specialises in the chemical industry. This recycling process allows to obtain the same properties as virgin PP thermoplastics, and therefore conform to the same applications. Previously, however, recycled PP plastics, used in France mainly in the construction, automotive and industrial sectors, could not be used in food contact applications.

"We are pleased to be part of our industry's shift towards more circular solutions and this innovative product is the first of its kind available on the market, says Antti Jääskeläinen, Executive Vice President, UPM Raflatac . This is the concrete result of our efforts to label more intelligently by developing products that reduce the use of non-renewable materials and treat waste as a valuable resource".

In August 2019, the label division of the Finnish forestry group UPM also released UPM Raflatac Forest Film, a label film without fossil raw materials and produced from renewable wood-based materials.

UPM Raflatac is committed to developing label solutions to eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging and to achieving a target of 100 per cent reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging by 2025.
