DS Smith and Multivac Launch Recycled Cardboard Food Packaging

This packaging uses 85% less plastic than conventional packaging.

The English paper manufacturer DS Smith and the German packaging machine manufacturer Multivac have developed Eco Bowl, a more environmentally friendly packaging for frozen, chilled and fresh food. This new packaging requires 85% less plastic than conventional packaging.

Eco Bowl consists of a recycled corrugated cardboard tray with a thin plastic film and a plastic lid. The tray is recyclable.
"Due to the light and rigid structure, the amount of plastic can be minimized and the materials can be easily separated for recycling" explains the papermaker.

This food packaging is designed to operate on Multivac packaging machines and bin sealers.

"Due to the film's excellent barrier properties, we can guarantee or even improve the shelf life compared to conventional MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) packaging for fresh food."

The tray and top film can be printed in full colour, both inside and outside. There is therefore no need to add cardboard labels or strips.

Eco Bowl has already been launched on the market in Germany at the end of 2019 with Amidori, a brand specialized in vegetable protein products.
