No more plastic bags to sell Lego. The Swedish group has announced that it will phase out these small single-use bags used in its boxes to package bricks in bulk. By 2025, the group plans to make all its packaging 100% sustainable and by 2030 to manufacture all its products from sustainable materials.
After two years of development, a Forest Stewardship Council-certified recyclable paper bag was chosen from 15 prototypes made from a range of different sustainable materials. They were particularly popular in tests with parents and children because "they were environmentally friendly and easy to open." From 2021, these FSC paper bags will be tested on a larger scale.
"We get a lot of letters from children asking us why we still use disposable plastic in our boxes. This has prompted us to start making the switch." explains Tim Brooks, Vice President of Environmental Responsibility for Lego Group.
This announcement comes days after Kellogg's announcement. The U.S. agri-food giant said it was working to make its pringles recyclable aperitif tile packaging . These tubes made of several materials make them impossible to recycle and were named a recyclers' nightmare in 2017 by the independent English Recycling Association. The group is also working on a version that favours paper.
