A new tool to measure the environmental impact of packaging

The impact of packaging is measured through 16 environmental indicators.

The packaging sector is equipping itself with a new tool to respond to the issue of ecological transition. The French Federation of Beauty Enterprises (FEBEA) announced on September 22nd during its annual conference the launch of Spice Tool, designed to measure the environmental impact of packaging in the cosmetics sector.

Initiated in 2018 by L'Oréal and Quantis, this initiative has been joined by some twenty cosmetics companies and packaging suppliers, including the FEBEA. The partners have developed a methodology to measure the environmental footprint of each cosmetic packaging over its entire life cycle, ensures the organization. Brands will thus be able to define the changes to be made to their packaging solutions in order to reduce their environmental footprint.

The impact of packaging is measured through 16 environmental indicators, including carbon emissions and its consequences on climate change, resource depletion, the amount of water used, and the effects on biodiversity.

" ?Les multi-criteria Life Cycle Assessment tools that existed until now made it possible to measure the environmental impact of packaging, but a choice had to be made, for example, between favouring CO2 emissions or water consumption. SPICE allows, for the first time, to determine the most favourable solution by weighting all these criteria environnementaux?" explains FEBEA.

An open and collaborative tool

Life cycle analyses (LCA) can be carried out by all companies, large groups such as VSEs or SMEs, since the use of Spice Tool is intended to remain free and open to all.
