"?Notre vision is to create a paper bottle that can be recycled like any other type of paper, and this prototype is the first step on the road to achieving this. A paper bottle opens up a whole new world of packaging possibilities, and we believe that paper packaging has a role to play at avenir?", said Stijn Franssen, Head of Packaging Innovation EMEA at Coca-Cola, who is working on the project.

The Danish company Pacobo, a joint venture between paper and cardboard packaging manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle specialist Alpla, was established in 2019. The company's sole aim is to be a pioneer in the transformation towards sustainable bottle packaging.

The paper bottle project was originally launched by the Danish innovation company EcoXpac in 2010, with the Carlsberg Group joining forces in 2015 to launch The Green Fiber Bottle Carlsberg and EcoXpac were collaborating on a first prototype paper bottle made from recycled fibres.
