"?La world's greenest spirit bottle will biodegrade in 18 mois?" says Bacardi. The spirits group aims to eliminate at least 3,000 tons of plastic (80 million bottles) each year by introducing a new packaging technology.
Bacardi has partnered with Danimer Scientific, a manufacturer of biodegradable products, to develop a bottle based on a biopolymer derived from the natural oils of plant seeds such as palm, canola and soybean.
"?Alors that an ordinary plastic bottle takes more than 400 years to decompose, the new Nodax PHA spirits bottle will biodegrade in a wide range of environments including compost, soil, fresh water and seawater, and after 18 months will disappear without leaving any microplastics nocifs?", is providing the spirits group.
The first spirit to be marketed in this bottle will be Bacardi Rum in 2023, before being joined by the company's 200 brands and labels. Bacardi announces plans to deploy this plant-based material to replace single-use plastic throughout the supply chain.
Scott Tuten, Director of Marketing and Sustainability at Danimer Scientific, states in a release :
" ?Nodax PHA is today one of the most promising ecological materials in the world because it offers the biodegradability that consumers demand without losing the feeling of quality that they receive from traditional plastic. The material offers the best of both worlds, and we look forward to working with Bacardi and integrating PHA into their iconic packaging.?»
In addition to this biopolymer bottle, the company will also develop a paper bottle to meet its goal of 100% plastic-free within ten years.
