For more paper in packaging, Syntegon works with papermaker Koehler

Both partners are developing paper packaging solutions to replace plastic.

The use of paper packaging to replace plastic is one of Syntegon's approaches to producing more sustainable packaging, and more generally represents a continuing trend in the food packaging sector. To this end, the packaging machine manufacturer has entered into a partnership with the Koehler Paper Group.

"?Nous know how much pressure there is from the consumer for greater sustainability. As suppliers to the packaging industry, we have therefore entered into a strategic partnership with Syntegon, one of the world's leading suppliers of processing technology and emballage?"." explains Eckard Kallies, head of the Flexible Packaging Paper Division at Koehler Paper Group.

Produce paper and plastic packaging on the same machines

The two partners have been collaborating since 2018, more specifically on vertical packaging technology. They have thus been able to develop a Doypack type packaging (a flexible pouch that stands upright). Their common goal is for Syntegon to be able to produce this type of packaging on the same FFS machines used for plastic processing.

This collaboration is supported by research work at the Technical University of Darmstadt. At the end of 2018, Koehler Paper Group launched the "Green Coating Collaboration" research partnership with them to develop functional surfaces from renewable raw materials. The result is a paper with a water-based polymer coating.
