The group is abandoning the non-recyclable bags of its cereals on the UK market.

Discount supermarket chain Aldi in the UK will replace the inner bags of its cereal boxes with a recyclable solution by the end of the year.

The 5th largest English supermarket, which unfortunately does not specify the composition of this new food bag, estimates that this modification should avoid the use of 650 tons of non-recyclable plastic per year, which corresponds to the amount of packaging used by 10?000 British households over one year, says Aldi.

"We have set ambitious targets to reduce our environmental impact and will continue to intensify our efforts to achieve them, said in a statement Chris McKenry, head of packaging at Aldi. This change in our cereal line is just one of the many initiatives we're working on right now..."

Aldi is committed to eliminating non-recyclable, non-compostable or non-reusable packaging for all its own brands by the end of 2022 and from all its shelves by 2025.

The group has started to implement various measures. For example, since October, the chain has been removing single-use bags for bulk fruit and vegetables from its UK stores for a total elimination by the end of the year. Customers will be encouraged to bring their own containers or buy reusable bags. And Aldi launched its own 100% recyclable freezer bag in November, also in the UK, made from fully recyclable polyethylene (95%) and seafood waste (5%).
