Teacher and signaller soon in the dictionary?

Manufacturers and installers of signs and signage have addressed a request to the Académie française.

e-visions has just published the letter it sent to the Académie française last October. In this missive, the professional union of sign manufacturers and installers of signs and signage requested the introduction of the words "teacher" and "sign maker" in the dictionary.

"For some of us, our predecessors were the painters of letters. We have since turned paint into light, but we have lost our name in it, says in her letter the president of the employers' organization, Julia Nojac Boutoille. We present ourselves as teachers and signallers. These terms are used to define our jobs, but your dictionary doesn't recognize those words."

These two words, commonly used in the trade to designate sign and signage manufacturers, are not officially recognized. "Their registration in the dictionary would allow a better knowledge and recognition of these professions" explains the President in a press release.

Although it is not the Académie française that chooses the entry of words in dictionaries, this request has the merit of pointing out this absence. And the more we use the words enseigniste and signalticien, the more legitimate their entry in the pages of the dictionaries will appear in the eyes of their editors.

The Académie française has not yet given an answer to e-visions.
