Folding cartonboard: Metsä Board is planning new production capacity

The papermaker is aiming for a 50% increase in its production capacity.

Metsä Board of the Metsä Group wants to increase its production capacity for folding carton. The Finnish folding carton manufacturer has just launched a feasibility study to produce 200?000 additional tonnes on the BM1 machine at the integrated Husum plant in Sweden.
This pre-engineering phase also includes an assessment of the capacity of the plant's port to handle larger volumes of raw materials and finished products.

"We have experienced good growth in our safe and durable folding cartons in recent years. The high rate of capacity utilization is a limiting factor to our growth. In order to continue to thrive, we need to consider expanding this capacity" says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

The Swedish plant with 700 employees currently produces 400?000 tonnes of folding carton. The BM1 paper machine is already the largest folding carton machine in Europe.

The group will decide on the implementation of this project next summer. And if the work goes ahead, the ramp-up of this new capacity would begin in 2023.
