No more plastic in Smarties packaging

This change affects 250 million packages sold each year.

The entire range of Smarties multicoloured chocolate confectionery sold worldwide is now packed in recyclable paper packaging. "Smarties is the first international confectionery brand to switch to recyclable paper packaging, eliminating an estimated 250 million pieces of plastic packaging sold worldwide each year." congratulates Nestlé, owner of the brand.

The new Smarties paper packaging consists of coated paper and labels made of paper or cardboard. Nestlé has also promoted sorting information for these paper packages.

"The development of safe and convenient paper solutions for Smarties has involved the development of new materials and testing by Nestlé experts from our R&D centre in York, UK and the Swiss Institute of Packaging Science," says Louise Barrett, Director of the Nestlé Confectionery Product Technology Center in York. We have adapted our existing manufacturing lines to allow the careful handling required for paper, while ensuring recyclability in all new formats"

Part of the famous brand was already packed in this new packaging. Nestlé launched this packaging with the Smarties tablet on the English market last year (more information : Nestlé replaces plastic with paper in one of its packaging Smarties ).

By 2025, Nestlé aims to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable and reduce its use of virgin plastics by one third.
