DS Smith France (87) goes to a greener gold plating

DS Smith Packaging France has invested in a new cold stamping technique for printing metallic colours on cardboard packaging.

A more environmentally friendly gilding solution has been installed at the cardboard packaging site of the English group DS Smith at Rochechouart in Haute-Vienne. The Optima SF110MF cold foil stamping machine was integrated into one of the plant's offset presses.

This equipment from the Dutch manufacturer Vinfoil uses Multiple Foil Use (MFU) technology: the metallised film can be used three times during the application of the foil, optimising the surface area of the foil reel. In addition, the machine is guaranteed carbon neutral by the manufacturer thanks to a compensation system.

"This new process meets our customers' expectations of sustainability for luxury packaging, explains Patrice Collet, Director of DS Smith Packaging Consumer. In addition, its added value in terms of rendering is perfectly adapted to products that wish to move up-market or to markets such as delicatessen, parapharmacy or scented candles."

This technology makes it possible to create metallic flat tints and decorations in different colours on coated surfaces. It completes the metallization offer on site with hot gilding equipment.
