Statistical portrait of the graphic industry workers

The evolution of employment, the average wage, the structure by age, the share of women... Dares publishes a numerical portrait of the graphic arts industry workers' family in France.

The Dares (statistical studies of the Ministry of Labor) published in April 2021 the "Statistical Portraits of Occupations". This study, which is based on occupational families, categorizes "Graphic industry workers" into a family composed of 2 occupations: unskilled workers in printing, press and publishing; and skilled workers in printing and finishing in the graphic industries. Skilled workers represent the largest share of jobs (86% in 2018).

50,000 graphic industry workers

Over the 2017-2019 period, this family of occupations includes 50,000 people, 27% of whom are women, the Dares reports. 12% of these people are under 30 years old and 34% over 50. The region where graphic industry workers represent the largest share of employment is the Centre-Val de Loire region (0.3%).

As far as salaries are concerned, 32% of full-time employees say they earn less than 1,500 euros net, and 23% more than 3,000 euros. The average net salary is 1707 euros.

A continuous decline in the number of workers over the past 40 years

Based on various sources (employment survey, Insee, etc.), Dares establishes that the number of workers in the graphic arts industries declined by 59% (an average of 2.5% per year) between 1982-1984 and 2017-2019.

As for the age of those employed in 2017-2019: 12% of graphic industries workers are under 30 years old, 20% are in the 45-49 age range, and 34% are over 50 years old. Nearly half of the graphic arts workers (40%) have a CAP, BEP or equivalent diploma.
