Record: World's largest scaffolding tarpaulin installed in UK

The tarp, a true work of art, measures the equivalent of nineteen double-decker buses stacked on eight levels.

9000 m 2 of tarpaulins! This is the surface printed and installed by the English company Embrace Building Wraps on the Selfridges Building in the UK.

Selfridges Building, designed by architecture firm Future Systems, is an iconic Birmingham building all curved shapes, housing a shopping center. In refraction since late last year, it is scheduled to be refurbished by August 2022.

Embrace Building Wraps, which specializes in extra large tarps and panels, was instructed to conceal this work without detracting from the beauty of this architectural building.

The covering, which is entirely digitally printed, is composed of 24 pieces of various shapes and sizes, most of which have three adjacent edges. The last piece of the tarp was installed last July.

"If you've ever tried lining up wallpaper, then you'll understand that this project is on a different scale: the average size of each individual banner is 388 m 2 , says Greg Forster, CEO of Embrace Building Wraps on his website. From end to end, our covering is 246 meters long and 37 meters high, which is equivalent to a giant wall of nineteen double-decker buses stacked eight high."

To install the 24 panels, which weigh five tons, the Embrace Building Wraps team installed 5,888 linear yards of tubing to create a curved frame around the building.

And in addition to being huge, this tarpaulin also has the particularity of having a quite remarkable graphic design. Made by the English designer and stylist Osman Yousefzada, it is decorated with floral patterns of six meters in diameter and three contrasting colors intertwined.

The previous Guinness Book record measures only 5,672 m 2 . This tarp was installed by Huawei España, in Madrid in June 2018.
