What is the relationship between the last French executioner and printing? Which paper for the 2021 International Contemporary Art Fair? What environmental impact for the digital world? When will internet outages end? This week's news.

Fiac 2021 communication printed on Torraspapel Malmenayde paper

The distributor Torraspapel Malmenayde is once again a partner of the International Contemporary Art Fair (Fiac), which is being held at the Grand Palais Ephémère in Paris from 21 to 24 October 2021. The French distribution subsidiary of the Spanish paper group Lecta has supplied all the paper for the communication materials.
For example, the Fiac catalog was printed on Recytal Matt, a 100% recycled, two-sided coated paper.

Nearly 11% of the electricity consumed by the digital world

The first figures from the study commissioned by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe) with the French Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (ARCEP) on the environmental impacts of digital technology conclude that the digital activity of a single French person causes, every year, an impact on climate change similar to a 2,740 km car journey, the production of 370 kg of waste over the entire life cycle, the displacement of 1,160 kg of materials, and the depletion of the equivalent of 1 kg of tin in natural abiotic resources.
It also establishes that 10.38% of electricity is consumed by digital services.

Three major failures at web giants

In the space of two weeks, the web world has suffered failures at the global level, reminding us of its fragility. First, on October 4 and then on October 8, Internet users were unable to access Facebook's social networks (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp). These huge breakdowns would be due to an erroneous update of the routing information to the Facebook servers and then to a change of configuration.

And this week, on October 13, it is the French host OVH which immobilized part of the Internet. Many sites, including institutional sites such as data.gouv.fr, were unavailable for over an hour. And this failure due to an error during interventions on a router of the datacenter of Vint Hill in the United States, which led to disruptions on the whole network. These interventions aimed to reinforce against computer attacks "particularly intense in recent weeks" explained OVH. This failure occurred two days before the group's IPO.

Did you know that? The last executioner elected best worker in France

The death penalty was abolished 40 years ago, in October 1981. But did you know that Marcel Chevalier, the last French executioner, or rather the last "national executioner of criminal arrests", was named best worker in France... but as a typographer?

Marcel Chevalier, became chief executioner in 1976 after having started in 1958 (at the age of 37) as assistant executioner. But before marrying the niece of the incumbent, the man who died in 2008, had been working in the graphic arts since he was 13.
Since his executioner activities (fortunately) do not require a full-time job, he is a copy editor, according to the Item, at the Imprimerie de l'Édition et de l'Industrie located in Montrouge, now closed .
"He was notified three days before by official mail, packed his suitcase and left. He was honest and hard-working, he didn't miss a day at the print shop except when the execution took place far from Paris. In any case, it always happened at night
entrusted in 2011 his widow to The New Republic.
