Smurfit Kappa launches water-resistant and recyclable corrugated paper

AquaStop packaging paper would be recycled like standard paper, according to Smurfit Kappa.

Paper group Smurfit Kappa has developed a water-resistant paper for corrugated board (PPO). Called AquaStop, this technical paper is intended to replace single-use plastics.

AquaStop has a special coating added during the manufacturing process. "Unlike many other coatings, this does not compromise the recyclability of the product and can be recycled in the same way as standard paper-based packaging." assures its manufacturer who does not specify the nature of this coating.

This PPO is mainly intended for e-commerce packaging, packaging of various products such as flowers, detergents and fruits and vegetables, as well as transport and storage packaging of refrigerated products exposed to condensation.

Lars Henriksson, vice president of product development for Smurfit Kappa's Paper Division, said: "We believe this is a truly revolutionary paper. We expect AquaStop to appeal to many of our customers, especially those who transport goods in demanding environments, because it will give them peace of mind that their products will remain in perfect condition even when exposed to water."

AquaStop is part of the new TechniPaper portfolio from Smurfit Kappa. This portfolio consists of papers that, thanks to their technical-mechanical properties, provide solutions to packaging problems caused during the transport and handling of certain goods.
