Since April 1, German printing ink and varnish manufacturer Siegwerk has had a new international business unit, dedicated to functional coatings for sustainable packaging solutions.
In addition to responding to its strategic focus on functional coatings, the extension of its organizational structure also strengthens its position in circular packaging solutions across all its business units.
The newly created coating unit will thus serve as a cross-divisional center of excellence for circular solutions, adding specialized functional coating technologies to Siegwerk's conventional coating offering for various packaging applications.
By providing specific functional properties crucial to packaging performance and durability, coatings can play a key role in sustainable packaging solutions, stresses Nicolas Wiedmann, CEO of Siegwerk.
"Functional coatings can, for example, help to reduce the complexity of packaging, or endow renewable materials like paper with functional properties so that they can be used for a wider range of packaging applications explains Gilles Le Moigne, who is in charge of the new Siegwerg unit. That's why we're increasingly focusing on developing innovative coating technologies that prioritize recyclability, enabling packaging to seamlessly re-enter the circular economy."
In addition to primers, notably for delamination and de-inking, and decorative coatings for optical or tactile effects, Siegwerk, which employs 4,800 people worldwide and generates sales of 1.3 billion euros, already offers a wide range of functional coatings, such as barrier coatings against liquids, grease, water vapour, oxygen or UV light, heat-sealed coatings through to protective coatings, e.g. for heat resistance, anti-scratch, anti-slip or anti-static.
