DS Smith and Somfy have launched a corrugated cardboard shimming solution for the transportation of roller shutter motors. This new system replaces the old expanded polystyrene (EPS) shims used during storage and shipping.
The project was developed by teams from paper manufacturer DS Smith Packaging France at the Kunheim site in the Haut-Rhin region of France, in conjunction with Somfy, a French manufacturer specializing in the automation of building openings and closures. This collaborative approach led to the emergence of several concepts, which were tested, adjusted and optimized throughout the project.
After a trial phase, an EE Kraft fluted cushioning solution went into production. This system adapts to 34 motor lengths and four case formats, reducing the number of logistical references. What's more, the carton's compactness saves significant warehouse space compared with EPS. "Quick and easy to assemble, developed to meet industrial cadences" says DS Smith.

For Somfy, this development supports its decarbonization and eco-design strategy. Tony Faure, project manager at Somfy, assures us that this cardboard cushioning solution, "from material
renewable, without compromising on the quality and protection of our products" marks a "an important step that facilitates handling and recycling" for their professional customers.
