File / Myth 5: Print Marketing: Are There Still Limits to What Print Can Do?

Reducing print marketing to a sheet of paper covered in ink no longer reflects the possibilities offered by modern production processes. Media, die-cuts, embossing, metallic effects, and customization make it possible to alter the shape, texture, and even the content of a document during the printing process. But this freedom quickly runs up against constraints related to manufacturing, cost, and industrial-scale production.

Format, material, color, texture, cut, customization: there are more variables behind a marketing print piece than meets the eye. The technical possibilities are numerous, but not all of them are equally appealing to a client, and not all of them translate as easily from the graphic designer?s screen to the production floor.

Print is no longer just a rectangular sheet of paper

A4, A5, square, portrait, or landscape. When starting a print project, the first instinct is often to choose a format. However, the document?s dimensions are not necessarily limited to the standard sizes used by printing presses and finishing equipment.

Die-cutting makes it possible, in particular, to alter the product?s outline after printing. A card, cover, sleeve, or promotional document can thus take on a shape that reflects its intended use or graphic identity.

This freedom opens up several design possibilities: windows, openings, interior cutouts, specific contours, or folding systems can all be incorporated into the document?s construction.

But stepping outside the box has consequences.

A specific shape must be cut, shaped, packaged, and transported. The format also affects the imposition and, therefore, the use of the sheet. A graphic design that looks appealing on screen may result in more waste or require an additional step after printing.

Form is therefore never entirely independent of the industrial process. And it is often during the quoting phase that geometry comes face-to-face with the realities of the workshop.

The paper directly affects the printed result

The same file printed on two different media does not produce the same result.

Paper weight, stiffness, surface finish, color, and texture all influence how a document is perceived. Smooth paper does not behave the same way as textured paper. Kraft paper does not reproduce colors in the same way as white paper. And increasing the basis weight affects both the feel of the paper and certain finishing processes.

The choice of paper should therefore not be made only at the end of the graphic design process.

It also affects part of the production process. Folding, creasing, cutting, and other finishing operations must be planned with the material?s characteristics in mind.

This physical aspect represents a fundamental difference between print and digital communication. The reader does not merely look at an image; he or she handles an object whose thickness, stiffness, and surface are all part of the experience.

For the printer, the medium thus becomes as much a technical consideration as a design choice.

The finishing process enhances the light and texture

Once the ink has been applied, the job isn't necessarily finished.

Embossing, metallic effects, hot stamping, and other finishing processes allow for surface treatment of the document after printing or in conjunction with it.

Textures add tactile information. Metallic effects alter the way light is reflected. Markings can isolate a graphic element and distinguish it from the rest of the composition.

Several processes can also be combined on a single product.

However, this accumulation raises a question that is rarely apparent in a model: each additional step is part of the manufacturing process.

It requires specific equipment, adjustments, handling, or a production step. It may also impose constraints on the substrate and on subsequent operations.

Adding a finishing touch simply because it is technically possible therefore makes little sense. It must serve a purpose in the document.

A design element used to prioritize information does not serve the same purpose as an effect added solely to fill space. In the first case, the technique supports the design. In the second, it mainly increases the cost.

Variable printing undermines the principle of identical prints

Another historical limitation of print media has gradually disappeared: the requirement to reproduce the same content throughout an entire print run.

Digital printing and variable data management make it possible to vary certain elements from one copy to the next.

The recipient's name is the most obvious example, but this logic can be extended to other types of content. Text, images, contact information, geographic data, or offers can be associated with different profiles within a single production.

The print series thus becomes a sequence of related works rather than a simple repetition.

This capability changes the logic of print marketing. Volume is no longer necessarily determined before the target audience is identified. A database can determine which documents need to be produced and what information each person should receive.

But the press doesn't correct inaccurate data.

Incorrect addresses, duplicates, approximate segmentation, or outdated information will be reproduced with the same accuracy as correct data. As a result, part of the prepress process is shifting toward the management of files, databases, and typesetting rules.

For printers, expertise no longer automatically ends with traditional prepress.

Paper can also lead to digital solutions

Print and digital media are often portrayed as two competing media. Technically, however, there is no reason to separate them.

A QR code or a web address can extend a physical document to include digital content. Catalogs, mailings, brochures, or promotional materials then become the first step in a journey that continues online.

This combination overcomes one of the historical limitations of print media: available space.

A document doesn't need to contain all the information. It can present the essentials and then direct the reader to a fact sheet, a video, a form, an appointment booking page, or a sales page.

It also offers another benefit: the ability to observe certain interactions triggered by the document.

Paper thus retains its physical function, while digital technology handles other stages of the process.

So the question is no longer necessarily about choosing between print and digital, but about determining what role to assign to each.

The real limitation of print often lies in the studio

On a model, almost anything seems possible.

You can envision a special type of paper, a die-cut shape, various embossed designs, metallic effects, and different content for each recipient. Then comes the move to production.

And mechanics takes center stage once again.

Each choice must be compatible with the substrate, the printing process, the finishing equipment, and other planned operations. The product must also be suitable for handling, packaging, and distribution.

Quantity, timeline, and budget round out the equation.

A manufacturing process that is technically feasible is therefore not automatically suitable for industrial-scale production under optimal conditions. And a manufacturing process suitable for industrial-scale production is not necessarily economically viable for every campaign.

This is precisely where the role of the printing company takes on a whole new dimension. Its work is not limited to simply reproducing a design; it also involves determining how that design can be produced and what consequences the client?s choices entail.

The possibilities of print are therefore limited less by imagination than by the balance between design, materials, equipment, and budget.
