Paper is often portrayed as a less environmentally friendly alternative to digital media. However, comparing these two formats is not simply a matter of contrasting a sheet of paper with a screen. Factors such as equipment manufacturing, energy consumption, recycling, and product life cycles show that environmental assessment is far more complex.

Comparisons between print and digital communication are often based on oversimplifications that do not take into account the full life cycle of the media. A printed brochure, a website, an email, or a video draw on different resources and serve purposes that are not always comparable.

Digital technology is often portrayed as a medium with no environmental impact because it does not produce any physical media. However, its environmental footprint stems primarily from the manufacturing of equipment, the operation of data centers, and telecommunications networks. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Data centers account for approximately 1% to 1.5% of global electricity consumption. When you factor in networks and devices, the energy footprint of digital technology becomes significantly larger.

Factors such as paper weight, transportation distances, recycling rates, the number of views, reading time, the type of device used, the lifespan of equipment, and the source of electricity powering data centers all influence the outcome. The ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards emphasize that an environmental comparison is only valid if both scenarios serve the same purpose and are evaluated using the same methodology.

Reducing the debate to a simple choice between paper and digital often leads to incomplete conclusions. The question is not which medium is consistently more environmentally friendly, but rather to assess the actual impact of each solution based on its use, context, and entire life cycle.
