Latest figures on the overall development of the printing business

The annual report of the Idep takes stock of the evolution of printed volumes in France. Although the trend is still downward, it is less strong than in the previous year.

The continuing downward trend in volumes

The Institute for Development and Expertise in Multimedia (Idep) published last November its Annual Report "?Regards on the communication markets graphique?". This publication, which takes stock of the overall development of the printing sector in France, is based on figures and data for the year 2018. And the year 2018 again confirms a decline in print volumes in France of around 2%, announces the Idep by way of introduction. However, this decline is less pronounced than in the previous year, which saw tonnage fall by 3.8%.

"?La continuous decline in volumes is due in particular to the growing importance of digital communication in our sociétés?", stresses the Idep. However, this decline does not affect all markets in the same way.

Another data provided by the Report is that the weights of paper used in the graphic industries, particularly for advertising printed matter, which accounts for a third of the total tonnage, have fallen sharply in recent years.

According to Eurostat data, imports of printed matter in all markets also decreased by 3,7 %. According to the IPPC, imports satisfy almost 30% of domestic demand, which is stable compared to last year. It should be noted, however, that imports will account for 21% of total demand for printed matter in France in 2014.

The main importing countries for printed matter are Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain. Together they account for almost 82% of the flows.
